「香港美不美?」“Hong Kong is beautiful, isn’t it?” 

「香港美不美?」系列記錄了中國遊客到訪香港金紫荊廣場的拍照行為。

多年來金紫荊廣場成為很多中國旅行團必到的香港旅遊景點。旅遊車將遊客載到廣場上,蜂擁地與金紫荊銅像合照留念。廣場上十來檔的無牌攝影攤販抓緊商機,手拿著樣辦照片,遊說並把遊客帶到銅像前,他們配備10mm超廣角鏡頭,用標準的普通話喊出一聲「香港美不美?」,遊客們答道「美!」,閃光燈隨即閃亮整個廣場。遊客排列整齊,衣著光鮮亮麗,拉起長長紅布,興奮地高舉手勢,就好像獵人打獵後跟獵物合照的模樣,再把相片刷印出來,跟親友分享這份喜悅。

遊客們這種近乎沒有自主意識的拍攝動機,對攝影者安排一式一樣的取景顯然不在乎,他們好像只想利用攝影把一些東西據為己有。這種背後的拍攝動機吸引了我的注意,我開始在這個異常熱鬧的空間,把鏡頭對準廣場上的攝影者與被攝者,將他們一動一靜的拍照體驗紀錄下來。偶然我也會坐在廣場一角的階梯,默默地觀察這場大規模、集體、陳腔濫調的活動。

旅行紀念品亦在旅遊者的旅遊體驗扮演著重要的角色。它們是構建旅遊城市形象、傳遞文化的重要工具和媒介。

香港回歸至今,我們也經常看見這些以金紫荊銅像作為主題的紀念品,例如指甲鉗、眼鏡布、冰箱貼等,這些都是與人們生活密切的東西。不少紀念品亦會以趣味和幽默的方式呈現,例如水晶球中下雪的場景、需要動手的拼圖等,試圖把嚴肅的政治歷史以輕鬆的手法呈現。

這些紀念品以高度的雷同性廣泛地散播出去。遊客從廟街、女人街等遊客區就能輕易地購買。那麼,我們該如何理解紀念品與金紫荊之間的關係?紀念品中的金紫荊連結了遊客對香港的回憶,也提醒了人們香港繁華的形象,金紫荊似乎就這樣代表了香港。與此同時,遊客把紀念品帶回家鄉,再送贈親朋戚友,就像殖民者從殖民地購買這些紀念品並帶回母國,彷彿象徵性地佔有了這個被動的地方。

我嘗試把紀念品重新置放在日常使用下的狀態,呈現購買後的日常使用經驗,進一步反思和探討紀念品如何定義一個地方。

“Hong Kong is beautiful, isn’t it?” is a photo series that documents the photographing behaviours of Mainland Chinese tourists visiting the Hong Kong Golden Bauhinia Square.

Over the years, the Golden Bauhinia Square has become a must-see for mainland tour groups. As tour buses drop them off at the square, they flock to take pictures with the golden Bauhinia statue. In the square, a number of unlicensed stalls seize the business opportunity to provide photography services to them, as they hold samples of printed photos and tout tourists for pictures services in front of the statue. Before the camera clicks, stall operators would shout “Hong Kong is beautiful, isn’t it?” in Mandarin. Tourists would reply “Beautiful!” The group is neatly arranged, brightly dressed, and happily posing while holding up a long red banner, as if a hunter is taking a picture with its prey. Photos are then printed to share the joy with their friends and relatives.

Tourists unconsciously fell for these photo taking services, as they are clearly not related about unoriginal framing of their picture. Rather, they are using photography as a means to possess something. Such photographic motive has captured my attention. I started to document the photographing experiences of the “photographers” and their subjects in this bustling space. Occasionally, I would sit on the stairs at the corner of the square and silently observe this massive, collective, and horde-like activity. 

Souvenirs also play a major role in a tourist's travel experience. They are an important medium for creating the brand image and transmitting the culture and history of the place.

Since Hong Kong's handover, it has become quite common to find Golden Bauhinia Statue-themed souvenirs such as nail clippers, microfibre cleaning cloth, and fridge magnets around the city. A lot of these souvenirs seek to display their political history in a fun and engaging way.

These souvenirs are replicated and disseminated in very similar and identical ways. But how should we understand the symbolic relationship between the two entities? Not only do these souvenirs function as a symbol of the tourist's experience in Hong Kong, they also possess symbolic value in representing Hong Kong's prosperity. In addition, when tourists bring these souvenirs home and share them with their friends and relatives, the souvenirs also represent a sense of belonging and even ownership of the land. 

To further reflect and explore how souvenirs define a place, I decided to place these souvenirs into daily life uses, showcasing what it looks like in everyday life.
